Making a mark: How Danish youth engage in society

In Denmark, many young people are determined to make a positive impact on the Danish society. With a strong focus on topics like democracy, digital innovation, and sustainability, they are part of shaping Denmark’s future.

Making their voices heard

In Denmark, there is an emphasis on education, innovation, and social welfare that provide a solid foundation for youth to explore their potential and make significant contributions to society through activities, and volunteer organisations.

Moreover, Danish youth shows a high level of political engagement. According to the Danish Youth Council (DUF), youth voter turnout in the 2019 general elections was over 85%, one of the highest rates in Europe. This high level of participation reflects their deep commitment to shaping their country's future.

Additionally, numerous NGOs and youth organisations, such as The Danish Youth Council, The Youth Climate Council, and The Youth Agency, work to empower young Danes to participate actively in democracy. These organisations offer training, resources, and platforms for young people to engage in political dialogue and take action on issues that matter to them.

Leaving a sustainable impression

Sustainability is a key concern for many young people in Denmark, who are determined to combat climate change and promote environmental stewardship. According to a 2023 report by Statistics Denmark, 65% of young people participate in environmental activities or organisations.

Educational institutions in Denmark have integrated sustainability into their curriculums, encouraging students to develop green technologies and sustainable practices. For example, the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) hosts an annual "Green Challenge" where students present innovative solutions to environmental problems.

Environmentally conscious behaviour also finds its way into more traditional children’s activities such as cub scout groups, where the emphasis is on teaching sustainable food habits.

Denmark is known for its digital prowess, and many young Danes are at the forefront of advancement. Tech start-ups founded by young entrepreneurs are flourishing, with Copenhagen ranking as one of the top tech hubs in Europe. Notable success stories include the digital learning platform "Lix," co-founded by two Danish students, which is revolutionising how students access textbooks.

Initiatives like "TechBBQ" and "Copenhagen Fintech" provide platforms for young innovators to showcase their ideas and attract investments, while organisations like Coding Pirates aim to elevate children’s IT competency and creativity.

Both in Denmark and around the world, there are countless ways for young people to actively engage in society.
In Denmark, the voting age is 18, but there are many opportunities to make a meaningful impact even before reaching this milestone. For example, young citizens can contribute by joining student councils, volunteering at local sports clubs, or participating in sustainability projects - just to name a few.
