KUNSTEN - Museum of Modern Art

Aalborg is a place situated in the heart of North Jutland and it delights not only art lovers, but also demanding tourists, children, whole families and all those who are hungry for new experiences.


The building of the museum is a product of the vision of the master architect Alvar Aalto and it is a masterpiece itself. It is designed to be a part of its natural surroundings, as it is situated on the edge of a large area of parks and woodland. This means that the visitors rush to KUNSTEN not only to explore the unique collection of modern art, but also to see the pearl of Scandinavian architecture.

Guests at the museum 

When you enter the museum, the first thing that strikes you, is the light and spaciousness of the exhibition halls. Thanks to the unique design of the building, the light falls in from all directions, illuminating the works of art and emphasizing shapes, colours and textures, illustrating Aalto’s motto: “What acoustics are for a concert hall, light is for an art museum.”

KUNSTEN has a permanent collection of about 1,500 paintings, sculptures, contemporary art.

Inside the museum

The collection is comprised of art pieces from naturalism to abstract art as well as experimental art forms.

The Danish collection is represented by J.F. Willumsen, Wilhelm Lundstrøm, Jens Søndergaard, Wilhelm Freddie, Egill Jacobsen, Asger Jorn, Carl-Henning Pedersen, Robert Jacobsen, Willy Ørskov Ingvar Cronhammar and others. The collection includes also international art by Max Ernst, Fernand Léger, Karel Appel, Constant, Victor Vasarely and Serge Poliakoff. By visiting the museum, you will get an opportunity to explore Denmark’s cultural heritage and see how the artists have interpreted their world through art from around 1900 to the present.

KUNSTEN is a full of life and family-friendly museum, where special events for families, schools, international guests and tourists are organized to make the visit rich in experiences and even more enjoyable. Various activities are conducted for the youngest audience, where, under pedagogues’ supervision, artistic skills and young talents develop. What is more, museum’s Sculpture Park and Water Pavillion attract those curious kids who like playing with the streams of water on a warm summer day.

Outside the museum

For those who get hungry during exploring KUNSTEN’s exhibitions, a famous chef- Mikael Kopp Christensen is happy to present the recipes coming from the North Jutland.

At the end of the day, after experiencing Danish art, local food and relaxing in the Sculpture Park, KUNSTEN invites you to the shop, where the visitors usually get good gift ideas, unique handcraft, design, art books, posters, art prints and much more.
