Paul Elvstrøm

Born 1928, the best Danish yachtsman and one of the best in the world ever. Elvstrøm has won 13 world championships in eight different types of boat, including Soling, Starboat, Flying Dutchman and Finn. He took part in nine Olympic Games from 1948 to 1988, winning four consecutive gold medals from 1948 to 1960, the first time in a Firefly, subsequently in Finns.

In 1988 he competed in a Tornado with his daughter Trine as crew. He has also won several European, Nordic and Danish Championships. Elvstrøm has developed new sails and other equipment. He has built several boats, including the Trapeze, and written books on yachting. He has also originated several international yacht racing rules.

In 1954 he established Elvstrøm Dinghy Sails, which he sold in 1974. In 1983 the Olympic Order in bronze was bestowed on Elvstrøm, and in 1996 he was chosen as Danish Sportsman of the Century.
