Danish Music: Only Girls Allowed

Women are currently dominating the global music scene. For the first time in pop history they are collectively outselling their male peers

In 2011 six out of ten of top selling albums in America are by female artists.

Here in Denmark the same phenomenon is happening with an array of talented female singer/songwriters right now taking control of the Danish singles and album charts and creating headlines abroad.

Below are five Danish female artists who are currently top of the pops.

AGNES OBEL (born October 28, 1980) is a singer and songwriter who released her first debut solo album Philharmonics in September 2010. It received glowing reviews from both Danish and international music critics and has been described as an album of sombre folk classics. Philharmonics has so far peaked at number one in Denmark and Belgium and charted inside the top-ten in France and the Netherlands. The first single ‘Riverside’ recently won Best song of the year 2011 in.

MEDINA (born Andrea Fuentealba Valbak on 30 November 1982) is a Danish Chilean pop, dance and R&B singer and songwriter. She rose to national fame in 2008 with the release of "Kun for mig" (Danish for "Only for me"). The single spent six weeks at No.1 on the Danish Singles Chart, eventually reaching the triple-platinum status. Since then she has had six more Danish No.1 singles and is now making a name for herself in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

OH LAND (born 2 May 1985) is a Danish singer/songwriter and record producer. She’s been described as the new poster girl for electropop. With the musical eccentricity of Björk, the fashion-diva style of Grace Jones, and the poise of a Scandinavian supermodel. Already a big hit here in Denmark she’s now breaking into the American market and has been signed up internationally by Sir Elton John. Earlier this year she made her US television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman singing ‘Sun of a Gun’.

TINA DICKOW (born 14 October 1974) is one of Denmark’s most successful female singer/songwriters. Her music has been described as a mix between Tracy Chapman, Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan. She’s produced seven albums so far, the latest one ‘Welcome Back Colour’ contains 27 songs including her biggest radio-hits, news songs and re-recordings of old favourites. Tina also enjoyed a big international hit singing vocals on the with Zero 7 song ´Home´. So far in Denmark she has been voted ‘Best Singer of the Year’ three times by Gaffa magazine.

FALLULAH (born 1985) is the stage name of the young pop music songwriter and singer Maria Apetri. Fallulah has been compared to British female singers, Florence & the Machine, Adele and Bat for Lashes. Her debut single ‘I Lay My Head’ was a massive hit in Denmark and was the prequel to the album ‘The Black Cat Neighbourhood’. She dominated the Danish pop charts in 2010 and the single ‘Bridges’ from the album was last year’s most played Danish-language single on radio. She describes her music as a mix between indie rock and Balkan beats with a hint of folklore.
